Monarch High School impressed in the Panther Invite on Saturday at Coral Springs Charter, with several top finishes, including a win from Tyler Metellus.
He took first place in the 113 pound-weight class after going undefeated, while Aiden Franco and Diddier Castillo Carrillo each came in fourth place. Devon Rhodes and Jaheim Dawkins were all placed at the top, while the Knights had three sixth-place finishers: Drew Weaver, Binyamin Simpson, and Justin Grimm. Ty Herbster, Jaeden Santos, Ethan Guzman and Gabriel Franco all competed. As a team, Monarch came in eighth place.
For the girls, Rosie Klein and Megan Han each went 2-0 at Jensen Beach High School. Metellius then went undefeated in the Deerfield Beach Duals and is 16-0 this year. Monarch will continue their season with the postseason approaching, featuring Districts, Regionals, and States.
The Knights played the Eagles on Wednesday and lost 2-1 before hosting senior day on Thursday and losing 4-0 against the Cougars.
They then played Coconut Creek High School on Thursday and lost 4-0. However, they did recognize their senior class: Alexis Vera, Gabe Lana, Sebastian Murillo, Brandon Amaral, Santiago Arrioja, Matthew Pereira, and Vitor Bastos. The Knights are now 7-11-2 on the season.
The Monarch girls team recognized their seniors before the new year but also had a win on Thursday against Somerset Prep to improve to 8-5-2. Both Monarch soccer teams will play Piper High School in their next game on Monday, January 13, starting at 4 p.m.
Monarch, though, struggled on the basketball court, dropping a pair of one-point games. The Knights lost 43-42 against Corasl Spring Charter and then fell 41-40 against Pompano Beach High School. Benjamin Boutin and Caleb Jean Baptist combined for 29 points against the Panthers, while Nickel Campbell had 14 against the Bucks.
The girls basketball team also fell against Coral Spring Charter, losing 62-13, but responded with a 42-38 win over Pompano Beach High School on Friday to improve to 2-8.
Next, both teams will play Olympic Heights Community High School in their next game on Wednesday, January 15, with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys playing at 7 p.m.
Monarch cheerleading also took first place in the BCAA Championship. After their strong start to the year, they will get set for Regionals later this month on Jan. 25 at Coral Glades.
