Young people interested in law enforcement can get a firsthand look at police work through the Margate Police Department’s Police Explorer Program.
The department is recruiting new members for the program, which offers participants hands-on experience in law enforcement while developing leadership, teamwork, and community service skills.
Meetings are scheduled to resume in September.
The program is open to young people ages 14 to 20 who have at least a 2.0 GPA, have no criminal convictions and are willing to attend weekly meetings. Participants are also expected to demonstrate good moral character, maintain a positive attitude and be willing to work hard.
Police Explorers receive training in several aspects of law enforcement, including patrol tactics, physical fitness, traffic enforcement, building searches, dispatch services and forensics. Participants can also take part in ride-alongs.
According to the department, the program is designed to give young men and women real-world exposure to police work while helping them develop skills that could prepare them for a future career in law enforcement.
