The Margate Police Department has something most people love: an ice cream truck.
And the ice cream is free.
The van was converted from a surveillance vehicle and was refitted to distribute ice cream at community events. The ice cream truck was recently present at the Dandee Donut Factory in Margate on August 22 and at other law enforcement events.
Denise Zabarsky, a training specialist for the police department, recently distributed ice cream sandwiches and cones to children in the community from the truck.
“We often come to community events and give ice cream mostly to children. We want to build positive relationships with families and for them to see us as regular people,” Zabarsky said, adding that she loves her job.
Officer Stephen Simmons, who leads the department’s community engagement effort, said he believes the ice cream truck is an important tool in building positive relationships between law enforcement and residents in Margate.
“We are part of the community, and we want to win kids over,” said Simmons.
