Carlos Robinson was already on the run when Broward Sheriff’s Office units picked up his trail — a pursuit that ended in a Margate neighborhood with six deputies opening fire and both Robinson and a BSO deputy shot, authorities said.
Robinson, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, was initially being pursued Thursday by Seminole Police at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in connection with a strong-armed robbery, authorities said. The tribal agency requested assistance from BSO, setting off a fast-moving chase that involved BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team and stretched from North Lauderdale into a residential area near the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street in Margate.
With help from BSO’s Aviation Unit, deputies located Robinson shortly before 2:30 p.m. and ordered him to exit his vehicle, hoping to de-escalate the encounter, according to BSO. Robinson, who authorities say was armed with a gun, refused to comply and instead opened fire on law enforcement, striking a BSO deputy assigned to the North Lauderdale district, officials said.
The deputy’s ballistic vest absorbed the impact, preventing life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Six deputies returned fire at Robinson, who was struck by gunfire, according to BSO. Authorities did not say how many times Robinson was shot or provide information about his condition.
Margate Police Department’s SWAT team moved in and took the injured Robinson into custody, authorities said, as first responders rendered medical aid.
Both Robinson and the wounded deputy were rushed to a local hospital. The deputy was treated and later released. No other deputies or residents were injured, authorities said.
Robinson faces charges that include attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest with violence. Authorities also said Robinson has an active warrant out of Palm Beach County.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the agency’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review.
The six deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation, BSO officials said.
Details about the robbery that prompted the initial police pursuit were not immediately available.
