Message from Mayor Antonio V. Arserio:
August is a special time of year in Margate as we wind down the summer and prepare for another school year. As a father, I can relate personally this year—my 5-year-old just started kindergarten! Like many parents, I know how exciting this time can be, but I also understand the importance of making sure our children are safe as they return to the classroom.
The City of Margate has a strong working relationship with our local schools, and keeping our students safe remains one of our top priorities. Our children deserve to learn in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and protected.
Recently, Margate faced the possibility of losing our Margate Police Department School Resource Officers from our schools after the School Board threatened to remove them. Thanks to the efforts of my colleagues, members of our community, and my advocacy on this issue, we were able to ensure that our School Resource Officers remained in our schools.
I want our residents to know that we will continue working to ensure these officers remain where they belong: protecting and building relationships with our students, teachers, and school communities.
As we begin this new school year, I encourage everyone to slow down in school zones, watch for children crossing the street, and help us make getting to and from school as safe as possible.
