Chabad of Margate is inviting residents to a series of family-friendly celebrations and services for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
Shavuot begins at sunset on Thursday, May 21, and concludes at nightfall on Saturday, May 23. The holiday marks the giving of the Torah and the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, a moment central to Jewish tradition and belief.
A Shavuot community event will be held on Friday, May 22, at 5:30 p.m. at Chabad of Margate, located at 5700 Horizons Lane. The evening will include a public reading of the Ten Commandments from a Torah scroll, followed by an ice cream bar, dairy buffet, and holiday crafts for children.
Rabbi Mendel Denburg of Chabad of Margate said the ice cream bar and dairy buffet are intended to create a welcoming, family-centered atmosphere surrounding one of Judaism’s most significant observances.
“Shavuot is a holiday which celebrates when the Jewish People received the Torah together at Mt. Sinai as ‘one person with one heart,’” Denburg said. “At these times, gathering together to hear the Ten Commandments read aloud is even more meaningful.”
According to Chabad, hearing the Ten Commandments read publicly is a longstanding tradition encouraged for men, women, and children alike. The custom gained widespread popularity beginning in 1980, when the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, encouraged families to attend synagogue on Shavuot to hear the reading together, Denburg said.
Additional Shavuot observances will continue at Chabad of Margate on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m. with a Yizkor memorial service followed by a Kiddush lunch. Yizkor is a traditional memorial prayer recited in memory of immediate family members who have passed away and is considered a meaningful part of the Shavuot holiday.
Community members interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP here.
