A Margate man was arrested Tuesday and charged in the fatal shooting of a beloved football coach.
Lance Brian Rolle, 39, was booked into jail on charges of second-degree murder, home invasion robbery with a firearm, and aggravated assault with a firearm in connection with the killing of 49-year-old Keon Smith, according to police.
Smith, the quarterbacks coach at Miami Norland Senior High School, was shot multiple times around 12:50 a.m. on June 3 at the Mary Alice Brown apartment complex in the 2800 block of Northwest 132nd Street in Opa-Locka, police said.
Smith was beloved by his players, fellow coaches, and Norland students alike.
“On behalf of Principal Gaines-Miller, Coach Heidelburg, the Miami Norland Senior High School family, and the entire football team, we’d like to offer the family of Coach Keon Smith our deepest condolences,” the school said in an Instagram post. “It was truly an honor to work alongside him as a coach, mentor, and leader. You will be truly missed in Viking Nation.”
Police records allege Smith was visiting his girlfriend’s apartment when Rolle – the woman’s ex-boyfriend – showed up and initiated a confrontation that ended with him forcing Smith out of the apartment at gunpoint and killing him.
Rolle was being held without bond Tuesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.
