During the June 5 commission meeting, a group of high-achieving students from the Broward Math and Science Schools in Margate were recognized.
Broward Math and Science, opened in 2014, is a K-12 charter school located at 6101 NW 31st Street in Margate.
The school’s students performed well at the 2024 Concept Schools Science and Engineering Fair held in Rosemont, Illinois, on April 27. Six middle school students earned four gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano praised their work and recognized each student. He encouraged them to describe their projects.
Logan Rudnick, a sixth grader, earned first place for an electric and engineering project in which he developed a virtual reality headset for people who are disabled and unable to play sports.
Manuela Montagnoli, an eighth grader, earned first place for health. She designed an app to help people detect allergies.
Stephanie Cleghorn, a sixth grader, earned first place for a health experimental investigation. She completed a project dealing with peanut allergies.
Zeynep Solmaz, a seventh grader, earned second place for her design investigation in electrical engineering. She designed an app to help match dress colors with skin undertones.
Jasmin Benniefield, a sixth grader, earned second place for a botany project. She designed an umbrella that shields plants from being flooded by excess rain.
Sofia Mateus, a seventh grader, earned third place for an environmental design investigation project. She designed an app to warn people about volcanic eruptions.
“We are very proud of these students. They have worked hard during the year on their projects, and we are proud of their achievements. We are looking forward to having more students in upcoming competitions,” said Elvy Pulliyil, a middle school science and biology teacher at Broward Math and Science Schools.
The school currently has 300 students, including 107 middle school students, according to principal Hasan Kose.
