With spring break approaching, Monarch High School has seen success in various sports this spring.
Tyler Metellus had a dominating wrestling season, finishing seventh at the State Championship. He previously placed in the top three in Districts and Regionals, while Rosie Kleine, who won Regionals, came in eighth at state.
The track and field team competed in Coral Springs and had Jaded Beaubrun record points in events along with Rickensoen Rozier and two relay teams. Kendall Stephenson highlighted the girls by placing third in the 100 meters and fourth in the 4 x 100 relay with Chelsea Dumas, Zykeria Rutledge, and Ka’Marrie Candy. Sasha Rodriguez also performed well in both the 100 and 400 hurdles.
After a 14-2 loss against Pine Crest School on Monday, the baseball team beat Pompano Beach High School 10-0 behind four RBIs from Noel Soledispa. Vinny Maxwell knocked in two, while Juan Londano and Diego Rojas added one. Aidan Mercado pitched a shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out four before a 4-3 loss against J.P. Taravella on Wednesday.
Next, Monarch will play Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School in their next game on Monday, March 24, at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs come into the game with nine wins in 17 games.
The softball team won 4-1 over South Broward High School on Tuesday, their first win in nearly two weeks. Sammie Rice led the team with three RBIs, while Jayden Uzzo knocked in one. Mia Macaione and Elana Ramirez combined to pitch all seven innings and strike out nine.
The Knights are 4-6 this year and have wins in Deerfield Beach, Coral Glades, and Coral Springs High School despite dropping games to South Broward and Western High School this week. They will play Marjory Stoneman Douglas in their next game on April 2 at 3:45 p.m. The Eagles are coming off a strong week in which they went 3-1 in the Orange Bowl Classic and also won 12-2 last season.
The flag football team dropped their final game heading into the break, falling to Marjory Stoneman Douglas. They have lost four in a row and have 3-7 this year after previously securing wins against David Posnack Jewish Day, Cooper City, and Blanche Ely High School. They will play Boyd H. Anderson High School in their next game on April 1 at 6 p.m. The Cobras are 9-1 this year and had their only loss coming against the Eagles earlier this season.
One of Monarch’s top teams this spring has been the boys’ volleyball team, which is 6-2 this year. They have beat Hallandale, Blanche Ely, Spanish River Hollywood Hills, Coral Glades, and Deerfield Beach while dropping matches against St. Thomas Aquinas and Pompano Beach High School.
Kenny Santos currently leads the team in kills, followed by Arthur Dias and James Dusek. Preston Hoang has the most blocks, while Fabio Castillo Jr. leads the team in digs and Reis in assists. Reis and Castillo have each shined while serving with their aces. The Knights will play Charles W. Flanagan High School in their next match on April 2. The Falcons are 2-4 this year and beat Everglades and Marjory Stoneman Douglas earlier this year.
