On Saturday, it was a record-setting day for Monarch High School’s Gianna Potenzano in the State Championship in Gainesville.
She had the chance to compete in the 4 x 400 relay with May Ibiri, Isen, and Katrice Burke. Potenzano also ran a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2.19:87. She also set the school record previously held for 11 years by Jacqueline Johnson.
“Gianna has worked tirelessly over the past three years,” said Head Coach Dione Hester. “The last two years, she has been injury-riddled. She is tough as nails, and it was an absolute pleasure to see her hit her target time at the state meet.”
In the 4 x 400, the Knights exceeded last year’s record-setting time. They came in 17th place with a time of 4:07.05. While this was the last race for May in high school, Potenzano will still have one more year to compete, while Isen and Burke are only freshmen.
“These girls can be proud of every accomplishment they achieved this year. I look forward to what new challenges lie ahead next year,” Coach Hester added.”
