Margate athletes will not be competing on artificial turf.
The Margate Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) agreed to end negotiations with NIDY Sports Construction over the artificial turf field conversion and to table the project at its October 14 meeting.
City Manager Cale Curtis told board members the artificial turf installation cost was too high. He said negotiations lowered the cost from $4.7 million to $4.1 million, but it was still too much. The original plan was to remove sod from three baseball fields and replace it with artificial turf.
The CRA passed a resolution to approve an interlocal agreement with the city to move existing utility lines adjacent to the City Center Development Project underground. The CRA and its development partner, Brookfield Holdings, will move the existing overhead utility lines along State Road 7 from Northwest 8th Street to Coconut Creek Parkway for the Margate City Center Development, which is within the CRA, according to city information.
The CRA also passed a resolution approving an easement agreement between the CRA and Florida Power and Light Company for the property at 1100 State Road 7 for underground utilities. According to city information, the work will take place between Atlantic Boulevard and Coconut Creek Parkway.
