Families and individuals needing help or a comfortable place to visit are welcome at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Margate.
The congregation recently hosted a Christmas party on December 14. It included a full pasta meal and fun activities for children. Santa and Mrs. Claus were present, and the adults enjoyed some fellowship. The community was invited, and members of nearby churches attended.
“This party was wonderful, and we played music and games together. We created opportunities for people to get together and share a meal. Some have no family in the area,” said Pastor Lucas Bonates.
Nina Culver, who played Mrs. Claus, was pleased to see people coming together to enjoy a pleasant Holiday event.
“It is important that we help people in the community,” she said.
Cokesbury offers a food pantry distribution on each month’s second and fourth Wednesday. The church helps about 240 families with fresh and dry food.
“I believe it is an essential part of our church’s mission to help people in the community. This is a community event,” said Bonates.
The church offers a tutoring program, Thumbs Up Thursday, in partnership with Margate Elementary School. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., children from the first to the fourth grade receive tutoring in various academic subjects. They also participate in outdoor exercise and receive a healthy snack.
“We help the children with reading and math and teach them practical skills such as cooking. We have older adults who volunteer as tutors,” added Bonates.
Cokesbury is located at 1801 NW 65th Ave, Margate.
