On December 20, Margate City Commissioner Anthony Caggiano officially joined the Broward County Solid Waste Advisory Board as an elected voting member, representing medium-sized cities.
The Broward Solid Waste Authority is comprised of 28 cities and Broward County. A decision-making Executive Committee of eleven members (and three alternates) includes a representative from Broward County and ten representatives from the participating municipalities.
Though this is his first official role on the board, Caggiano is no stranger to its workings, having attended previous meetings as an observer. He has been vocal about his determination to tackle the growing challenges surrounding waste management in Broward County.
With Broward County’s population steadily increasing, the demand for effective waste management has become a critical issue. Caggiano emphasized the need for environmentally safe and sustainable solutions, pointing out the limitations of current proposals.
For instance, transporting waste to the Okeechobee landfill has been floated as a potential fix but dismissed by Caggiano as “expensive and impractical.” He also stands firmly against the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill, a position shared by the Coconut Creek Commission.
“The problem is not going away, and we must find a way to solve it,” Caggiano said. “I want to bring some reality to the board, and I know this is critical to everyone.”
Caggiano’s passion lies in addressing fundamental municipal challenges that often go unnoticed but are essential to daily life. Garbage collection, water, and sewer systems are his primary focus areas.
“When the garbage is removed from your curb, it appears somewhere else. We must find a way to deal with it,” he said.
