A 12-year-old boy and a dog died Thursday when a residential fire engulfed a single-family home in the 5000 block of Southwest Sixth Street in Margate, authorities said.
Fire officials said two other adult relatives were also inside when the fire broke out in the home around 4:30 p.m. Both escaped, but one was later transported to a local hospital, officials said.
Fire crews from Margate – with assistance from fire departments in North Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, and Coral Springs – entered the house to try and rescue the child, but when they found him, the child had already died, according to a Margate city spokesperson.
One dog hiding inside the house was found by firefighters and rescued, but a second dog died, the spokesperson said.
The house had a partial roof collapse because of the flames.
“The fire was so extreme that one Margate firefighter’s bunker gear caught on fire, including his pants and boots,” the spokesperson said. He was not injured, officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Got News in Margate? Send it to Margate Talk. Don’t Miss Reading NW Broward County’s #1 News Sites: Coconut Creek Talk, Coral Springs Talk, Parkland Talk, Tamarac Talk, and Sunrise FL Talk.
