A woman is behind bars after what police described as a disturbing and sustained campaign of stalking, harassment, and intimidation that targeted not only a former romantic partner and his wife, but their minor children as well.
A Margate Police Department arrest report indicates that Neriman Ayse Can, 36, of Pompano Beach, was arrested on July 29 and charged with three counts of aggravated stalking-domestic violence, aggravated stalking of a minor under 16 years of age, and aggravated stalking after an injunction for protection.
Records show Can is accused of relentlessly contacting the family through dozens of fake phone numbers, surveilling their home and whereabouts, and sending threatening messages over nearly seven months.
The victim told police that Can had been in an on-and-off relationship with her husband for several years. After the relationship ended, Can began sending harassing text messages using spoofed or temporary numbers.
On January 15, Can allegedly sent a group text to the victim and her husband in which she wrote, “You’re lucky I didn’t tell them who I am! And what you do to their mom with me,” implying that she might reveal personal details to the children. That same message thread included two photographs of the couple’s 10-year-old son walking home from school alongside his father.
The victim told police that Can had never met her children and had no reason to be near the school.
Later that same day, Can sent an even more alarming message through a TikTok account. It included an image of a small yellow children’s casket with the caption: “You think [child’s name] would like this?”
Records show that on January 26, Can sent another disturbing message that read “Does another casket for [child’s name] have to be sent to your other two kids for you to answer the phone?”
On March 31, Can sent a photo of the family’s residence to both the victim and her husband, stating she had just driven by their home. She sent more messages soon after, claiming that the trash cans on the street looked different from the day before, proof that she was closely monitoring their home in real-time. That same day, she texted, “I’m not talking through the phone anymore. It needs to be in person. Oh, wait, you are home.” She followed up by sending another photo taken from outside their home.
On April 29, Can sent a message about the victim’s child’s room, stating, “I see your son’s lights are on in his room. Bright, bright. Nice trophies.” The victim confirmed that trophies sat in the windowsill, verifying that Can had been physically watching the child’s bedroom from outside.
On May 8, messages discovered on the victim’s iPad showed that Can was communicating directly with the husband using her real number. “I just drove by your house. [Husband’s name] is not there. I’m going to check if your son’s school is out today. I have the schedule,” she wrote before sending a screenshot of the child’s school calendar. She added, “You will hear me soon. I promise you this,” followed by a declaration that she would be bringing a speaker to the daycare to shout accusations about the husband cheating.
Despite being served a court-ordered injunction on May 23 barring her from contacting or approaching the family, Can’s behavior continued.
On July 29, while detectives were patrolling Margate, they spotted Can driving a white BMW rental vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. She acknowledged she was likely in violation of the court order and admitted she had been near a Publix where the victim had been shopping at that time.
Detectives later traced numerous spoofed phone numbers back to a single AT&T account, registered under Neriman Can’s name, using her Pompano Beach home address.
Can was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. She is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
