A man was arrested after police say he stole a U-Haul van, refused to return it, and resisted officers during a traffic stop.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Calvin Baggs, 60, of Pompano Beach, initially used an alias and fake information to reserve a U-Haul on September 10.
Employees informed officers that they had previously told him that the reservation could not be completed due to the requirement for a working phone for security verification. Despite that, Baggs allegedly convinced an employee to hand him the keys to a 2025 GMC cargo van, which he drove off the lot without paying.
When U-Haul staff contacted him minutes later, they instructed him to return the vehicle. Baggs repeatedly refused and eventually disconnected his phone. Attempts to charge the reservation’s payment method also failed. The cargo van was reported stolen, and officers in the area were notified to be on the lookout for it.
On September 11, a license plate reader alerted police to the van’s location. Officers initiated a high-risk traffic stop at Copans Road and Banks Road, where Baggs was taken into custody.
Police said he initially identified himself with fake identification, but officers determined his real identity through state records, which revealed his license was suspended.
Baggs was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $3,000 bond.
