A new development, once the site of the Carolina Golf Club, is one step closer to becoming a reality.
The planning and zoning board recommended approval for a development agreement land use plan amendment for rezoning during an October 7 hearing. This item is scheduled to come before the commission during the November 5 meeting.
The commission chambers were packed with residents concerned about the project. Many spoke against the planned development, but some individuals supported it.
The new development, known as the Lakes of Carolina, would be developed by Rosemurgy Properties.
According to the presentation made at the meeting, the conceptual master plan would be divided into four pods or sections. Pod A would have 57,500 square feet and be for commercial use. Pod B would be for residential use with 377 units, and Pod C would be for residential use with 507 units. Pod D-H would be 65 acres of open space, including a dog park, and more than 3 miles of walking trails.

The surrounding community would benefit from the walking trails, improved infrastructure, nearby shopping, four pocket parks, lakes, and nearby shopping, according to the presentation.
