North Broward Prep baseball picked up a 5-1 win over Coral Springs Charter Wednesday night in their Regional Quarterfinal Game.
This is the Eagles’ 10th straight post-season victory after winning the State Championship in 2021.
NBP also won the District Championship following their dramatic comeback in extra innings highlighted by Yoel Tejada Jr’s grand slam and walk-off home run. He also got the start on the mound, and after struggling in his previous outing, the University of Florida commit threw 51 innings, allowing one run and striking out six.
“I figured out a lot of teams like to cheat on me, especially with the fastball,” Tejada said. “I had to challenge them more with my fastball in, and I thought I just came out with much more energy.”
Riley Luft and Jonathan Xuereb recorded the final five outs while NBP recorded nine hits. The Eagles had early opportunities but could finally come through in the bottom of the fourth on A.J. Cutler’s two-run double.
After the Panthers scored in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk, Clancy Marsh knocked in two more before Mauricio Bejarano came home to score on a wild pitch.
“I thought Yoel came out with a chip on his shoulder,” said Head Coach Brian Campbell. “He told me he wanted to pitch and had something to prove, so I gave him the ball.”
North Broward improved to 19-9 this season, while CSC finished another historic season with a record of 15-10-1. Head Coach Charlie Fine thought his guys played extremely hard despite the loss.
“We went up against the reigning 4A State champions who had a veteran group back and were neck and neck with them,” said Head Coach Charlie Fine. “Hats off to them. They played well and deserved that win. They got a great team with a terrific coaching staff that knows how to get the most out of them.”
A.J. Prendergast allowed only two runs in five innings. However, they could only generate one hit, which came on an infield single from Haiden Walters.
The Eagles are set to play Gulliver Prep in the Regional Semifinals after the Spartans’ 6-3 win over Monsignor Pace. These two teams met earlier this year, with the Raiders winning 6-0 and a record of 17-9. First pitch for this Regional Semifinal is set for Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. at North Broward.
