Demetrius Montell Inman {BSO}
A Margate man has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse after his three-month-old daughter was hospitalized with severe head injuries that doctors determined were consistent with violent shaking.
A Margate Police Department report shows that Demetrius Montell Inman, 24, of Margate, was taken into custody on August 26 in relation to an incident that occurred on April 15.
Records show law enforcement alleges that Inman was alone with his infant daughter for approximately eight hours when the child began “crying excessively,” before becoming lethargic and eventually going limp.
An emergency call was placed, and Fire Rescue transported the infant to Broward Health Coral Springs, where doctors discovered bleeding on both sides of the brain. The child was later airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center for further treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Specialists, including neurosurgeons, neurologists, and members of the Child Protection Team, determined the infant suffered traumatic brain injury with bleeding on the brain and eyes “too numerous to count.” Doctors advised detectives that the injuries were consistent with non-accidental abusive head trauma, commonly referred to as shaken baby syndrome.
Detectives wrote that the child “would not have been normal or in good health after the infliction of these injuries,” and that the symptoms described by Inman were consistent with immediately following such trauma.
Based on medical records and investigative findings, authorities charged Inman with aggravated child abuse and arrested him on August 26. He remains held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
