Trentny Jamaal Leak Jr. {BSO}
A Lauderhill teenager has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after police say he shot another teen during an attempted armed robbery earlier this month in Margate.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest affidavit, Trentny Jamaal Leak Jr., 18, was taken into custody on October 22 after detectives linked him to a shooting that occurred on October 13 near the intersection of South Rock Island Road and Southwest 7th Street.
Investigators say officers from Margate Police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found a juvenile victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and severe injuries to his stomach and lower back.
Records indicate the victim was airlifted to a trauma center, where doctors determined he had a lacerated colon and fractures to three vertebrae. The boy underwent emergency surgery and remains hospitalized with what is described as limited mobility.
According to the victim, he was walking home from Broadview Park when a black sedan with tinted windows pulled up beside him. A man in the back seat asked how much his necklace cost, then offered him a ride. When the teen declined and began walking away, the suspect called him back and continued to ask about the jewelry.
As the victim approached, the rear passenger pointed a black handgun at him and said, “I want it,” before grabbing for the necklace. During the struggle, the suspect pulled the trigger, shooting the teen in the stomach.
Two witnesses nearby told investigators they saw a man talking to the victim at the passenger side of a black Nissan Altima before hearing a gunshot. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the vehicle leaving the area moments after the shooting.
License plate reader data later identified the suspect’s vehicle as a 2010 black Nissan Altima, registered to a woman whose son matched the shooter’s description, and was later identified as Leak.
Detectives obtained a DNA warrant and tracked Leak to his Lauderhill residence. When officers tried to contact him on October 22, he fled on foot but was captured shortly after. During questioning, Leak admitted that he had tried to steal the victim’s necklace and fired the gun when the victim resisted.
Leak told investigators he had been riding in the car with his female cousin and another man who had given him the firearm and encouraged him to commit the robbery.
Leak was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
