The City of Coconut Creek celebrates Juneteenth with a free concert, food trucks, and guest speakers.
Held on Friday, June 17, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard, the event includes literary readings on the history of Juneteenth and music by the Valerie Tyson Band.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, on June 19, the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
TJ’s Southern Kitchen, Don Mofongo, Eat Da Bone BBQ, and Kool Treats By Mama Dukes will provide delicious meals and snacks for purchase.
Valerie Tyson Band is a stellar group of musicians and singers who create magic every time they take the stage. Known for electrifying and soulful performances, the band plays classic and modern music.
This nine-piece band boasts an enviable repertoire of favorites, including today’s Top 40 hits, smooth jazz, R&B classics, essential rock melodies, and reggae and tropical staples.
The residents are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers but leave the dogs home.
