Chabad of Margate will host a Chanukah celebration and menorah lighting on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 4:30 p.m. at the northwest corner of Margate Boulevard and State Road 441.
The free community event will feature music, Chanukah treats, a fire show, and the participation of local and state elected officials, according to organizers.
In a statement announcing the celebration, Rabbi Mendel Denburg of Chabad of Margate emphasized the Jewish holiday’s message of light and resilience.
“The message of Chanukah is so relevant at the current moment. At a time when outside there seems to be so much darkness, it is our duty to be a source of light, of goodness, and kindness,” he said.
Rabbi Denburg also highlighted the symbolic placement of the menorah in Jewish tradition.
“In Jewish Law, the best place for the menorah is by the front door of your house, representing that the light is not meant to stay inward, but rather shine outwards and have a positive effect on those around us.”
He added that “light is an extremely powerful force,” noting that while “much darkness is needed to extinguish a small light, all you need is one small match to dispel a lot of darkness. Every good deed that we do carries tremendous capability to be the catalyst for so much light and positivity.”
Calling the gathering an opportunity for unity, Rabbi Denburg said, “What a better way to celebrate Chanukah than to gather together as a community, near City Hall with our elected officials, and proudly kindle the menorah.”
