Joel Gonzalez was recognized as the athlete of the month during the November 25 commission meeting.
Gonzalez, 13, a member of the Laser Sharks in the city’s youth baseball league, has achieved success on the diamond and is a team leader. He was recommended for the honor by his coaches. He has hit five home runs, three inside the park and two over the fence. Gonzalez plays mostly pitcher and catcher, but will play in any position. He often leads the team in prayer.
“I love baseball, and I want to continue playing and improving,” said Gonzalez, an eighth grader at Renaissance Charter School at Coral Springs.
He received a plaque from the commission and a gift bag. His father, Joel Gonzalez, said he is proud of his son and hopes he continues playing baseball.
