Margate residents will still be able to smoke and vape in city parks.
The commission considered an ordinance during the November 25 meeting to prohibit smoking in parks, but after some discussion, they voted against it. The item was brought before the commission at the request of Tobacco Free Florida, according to City Manager Cale Curtis.
Mayor Antonio Arserio asked whether there should be a complete ban across the entire park or only around playground equipment. He said people should use common courtesy and not smoke or vape around children.
Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano said he does not like smoking, especially near children, but does not believe it should be banned in parks.
Commissioner Arlene Schwartz said people should not smoke in public parks because it could bother non-smokers.
