Man Accused of Choking Woman Unconscious, Sexually Assaulting Her for Hours at Serino Park

A Margate man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he chased a woman who was sleeping on a bench, choked her unconscious and sexually assaulted her over the course of several hours at a city park.

According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Omar Boatwright, 38, was arrested July 24 and charged with sexual battery with a weapon or force and battery by strangulation.

According to investigators, the victim told police she had been sleeping on a bench near Southwest Eighth Court and North State Road 7 when she was awakened by a man later identified as Boatwright.

Police said Boatwright attempted to engage the woman in conversation before repeatedly insisting she accompany him to nearby Serino Park to have sex. The victim told police she repeatedly refused but eventually walked with him before attempting to flee before any sexual contact occurred.

Investigators said surveillance video captured Boatwright chasing the woman and grabbing her from behind.

The woman told police she screamed and fought back, hitting Boatwright, in an attempt to escape. Police said Boatwright responded by punching her multiple times before wrapping his forearm around her neck and choking until she lost consciousness.

When the victim regained consciousness, investigators said she found herself in a grassy area inside Serino Park. According to police, Boatwright had partially removed her clothing and raped her vaginally and anally without her consent.

The victim told detectives the assaults continued over approximately six hours, during which she was forced to engage in vaginal, anal and oral sex on about four occasions. She told investigators she complied because she feared Boatwright would kill her if she fought back.

Police said Boatwright did not use a condom and ejaculated inside the victim an unknown number of times.

After the assault, the victim contacted law enforcement. Officers located both her and Boatwright at Serino Park.

Investigators documented bruising around the victim’s eyes along with red marks on her face and neck that were consistent with her account of being punched and strangled. She was transported to the Sexual Assault Treatment Center, where a forensic examination was performed, and clothing from both the victim and Boatwright was collected as evidence.

The victim told detectives she did not know Boatwright and had never seen him before the assault.

Records show Boatwright admitted to approaching the woman after seeing her asleep on the bench. He told detectives the victim owed him $200 from a previous encounter and claimed she agreed to have sex with him. Police said he denied striking or strangling the woman but could not explain her injuries.

Investigators also said Boatwright voluntarily provided DNA swabs for comparison, according to the report.

Boatwright was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is currently held without bond.
