High school sports is officially underway at North Broward Prep, with four teams competing in their first game.
On Friday, the football team began with a dominating 46-13 win over Somerset Academy.
Mason Chapman and Joshua Espinosa combined for 211 yards with four touchdowns. Anthony Maestre, Braxton Bylow, Caleb Makovsky, and Tromon Isaac all recorded touchdowns, with Isaac leading the way with 96 yards. He also had one of the team’s two interceptions with Nico Quintero.
“Isaac is a tremendous athlete,” Nottage added. “He has a very bright future, and while he is an eighth grader, he is very mature for his age as an athlete. He is a playmaker and does a lot of great things for us offensively and defensively.”
Maestre and Jonah Cohen also scored rushing touchdowns, while Braxton Bylaw led the team with four tackles.
“We are definitely going in the right direction,” Head Coach Rex Nottage said. “We are young, but we did some great positive things as a team. I am proud of their effort, especially for only being together for about four weeks.”
The Eagles won their opening game for the first time since 2018. They are coming off a five-win season and will play Archbishop McCarthy High School on Friday, September 1 at 7 p.m. The Mavericks are 1-0-1 this year after beating Pine Crest 41-0 in their last game, but lost 55-6 against NBP last year.
The North Broward Prep volleyball team recorded their first win of the season over American Heritage on August 23. It came during the team’s second match after they fell in their opening against Boca Raton Christian School. The Eagles, though, won in four sets.
After splitting the first two, NBP won 25-17 and 25-18 in the final two sets. They then beat FAU High School in their second match in four sets to move to 2-o for the first time since 2008.
Their team consists of Baylor Worley, Bruna Saporti, Hailey Caple, Madison Easton, Destiny Wiggins, Yasmin Marti, Sophia Grishkina, Jayda Palumbo, Stella Hartman, Ava Swartman, Riley Dynan, Costanza Lira, Chelsea Ventura, and Emily Goldburg.
The Eagles are coming off a season where they went 9-9 and had a win in their first playoff game. They will play their next match on Tuesday, August 29, against The Benjamin School at 6 p.m. The Buccaneers won 16 matches a season ago, including a three-set victory over NBP. Following this, NBP will play 11 more matches before the start of the District Tournament.
In cross country, the Eagles competed in the Park Vista Cobra XC Invite. Willis Gillis led the boys’ team with a 15th-place finish. Eric Levy finished 36th, while Jackson Rivers and Noah Rivers placed in the top 100. Joseph Rondon, William Kontos, Daniel Robles, Calvin Lukens, and Luke Diamond also competed, while Ryan Marder, Christopher Edwards, Luciano Belize, and Noah Moras ran in the junior varsity race.
The top time from the girls was from Madison Pavon. She finished 85th, followed by Briley Rebello, Elise Pluta, Lucia Casacci, and Katherine Heggerick. Ellie Garcia ran in the junior varsity race and finished 34th, while Luciana Barriga came in 63rd.
The boys’ golf also began their season, competing against St. Andrews School, while the swim team had a meet at Westminster Academy.
