Construction of the Margate Fire Department’s new firehouse is entering its final stages, with builders currently erecting the facility’s tower, city records show.
After years of planning, design, and permitting, Station 58 on Rock Island Road and Northwest 6th Court is the first new fire station to be built in Margate in more than 24 years, according to the city.
The original Station 58 was completed in 1974. Firefighters said it had badly deteriorated in recent years, with reports of mold plaguing the now-demolished building.
Before the demolition of the old station in August 2021, builders had to construct newly paved driveways and parking areas, along with temporary housing and storage for existing emergency vehicles and equipment, to ensure continuity of service.
“The new fire station will better serve the needs of the community,” said Margate Fire Chief Robert Lorenzo. “Our firefighters will have a technologically advanced station, exceeding industry health and safety standards.”

The new foundation of the firehouse has been laid, the floor slab has been poured for the living area, and the stem walls have been completed at the facility, which will have rapid bi-fold doors for speedy exits by firefighters.
The general contractor, Sisca Construction Services, has said builders will soon complete the roof and tower, as well as finish the station’s interiors, including dormitory rooms and offices for firefighters, communal areas for dining and exercise, and specialty rooms for decontamination.
Sophisticated communication systems and electronics will also be installed in the 8,904 square foot facility.

Among other features, the property will have a 9/11 memorial located in front of the station and an official green energy certification from the state.
During the fourth quarter of 2022, fire department personnel will leave the trailer they are now using and occupy the new station, according to the city.
“We look forward to welcoming the community for the grand opening,” Lorenzo said.
