The Margate Police Department responded to a variety of incidents and made multiple arrests between July 29 and August 4, 2025.
Theft and Property Crimes
Theft of Bicycle
A 16-inch orange Cannondale bicycle was stolen from the front door area of a residence on Pinewalk Drive North between 9:30 p.m. on July 28 and 9:30 a.m. on July 29. The bike was not locked.
Vehicle Burglary
A black 2019 Infiniti Q60 had its front driver’s side window smashed on NW 20th Street. No entry appeared to have been made and a wallet inside the center console was untouched.
Failure to Return U-Haul
A 2023 white GMC U-Haul cargo van rented by James Davis (10/29/1990) from 5185 Coconut Creek Parkway was not returned by the June 28 deadline. Multiple recovery attempts have failed.
Retail Theft – Dollar General
On separate occasions, suspects stole approximately $110 in merchandise from the Dollar General at 700 S. State Road 7.
Additional theft was reported at the same location under a separate case.
Theft – Bath and Body Works
Theft reported at the Bath and Body Works located at 5445 W. Atlantic Blvd.
Theft – Burger King
A Motorola cell phone was stolen from a booth at Burger King, 550 N. State Road 7, around 1:15 p.m. after being left charging unattended.
Burglary – Conveyance
A juvenile male was detained after being seen pulling on car door handles on SW 5th Street. No prosecution was pursued. A possible second vehicle/victim may be involved near Martin Road.
Burglary – Delayed
At Cube Smart, 5500 NW 15th Street, a lock was cut and multiple items stolen. The owner had not visited the unit in over two months.
Burglary – Structure
Approximately $1,000 worth of bicycles were stolen from a locked storage area at a residential building on Rock Island Road. Items stolen include three beach cruiser bicycles.
Grand Theft Auto
A 2022 grey Dodge Charger Scat Pack with a black roof and hood was stolen overnight from NW 25th Street. The vehicle’s rear center brake light displays “VORHEES.”
Robbery and Violent Crime
Armed Robbery – Nail Supply
Three females wearing cropped tops entered a nail supply store at 6542 W. Atlantic Blvd., stole items, and sprayed the store owner’s son with mace. The suspects fled in a white vehicle before police arrived.
Retail Theft – CVS
Three females matching the description from the robbery above stole items from CVS at 1200 N. State Road 7 and fled in a white Toyota Corolla. The incidents may be related.
Arrests
Trespass After Warning
Derrick Mason (10/25/1977) was arrested for trespassing at 2000 N. State Road 7.
Domestic Violence Arrest / Missing Endangered Adult Recovery
Jonathan Lewandowski (09/03/1987) was taken into custody on Highlands Circle.
Felony Capias Arrest – Domestic Battery by Strangulation
Darren Cunningham (03/05/1989) was arrested during a traffic stop near Holiday Springs Blvd. and NW 25th Street. He was turned over to BSO Main Jail.
Domestic Battery Arrest
Jenny Lynn Hauts (11/16/1990) was arrested for domestic battery on NW 11th Street and turned over to BSO.
Warrant and Trespass Arrest
Brenda Leatherwood was arrested at Walmart, 5555 W. Atlantic Blvd., for trespassing after warning and two active capias warrants. She was turned over to BSO.
Criminal Mischief and Baker Act
Julie Lafluer (07/09/1994) was arrested at Marshalls, 5461 W. Atlantic Blvd., after intentionally damaging property throughout the store. She was also placed under a Baker Act.
Warrant and VOP Arrest
Matthew Grant (12/08/1991) was arrested for failure to pay child support and violation of probation during a traffic stop at 2968 N. State Road 7.
