The Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Margate has a new pastor.
The Rev. Victoria Guthrie has come from St. Petersburg, Florida, where she served two small congregations, to lead Cokesbury.
Upon meeting Guthrie, one gets the sense that she is friendly and cares about others. “Now I am still getting to know the members, and I want to get a feel for the community,” she said.
Overcoming challenges is something Guthrie understands. She faces cerebral palsy and uses a cane when walking. “People with cerebral palsy face different situations. When I was younger, I faced difficulties in school and other places,” Guthrie said.
Though she has a disability, Guthrie does not want it to define her. “I want people to see me for who I am,” she said.
And now Guthrie is looking forward to getting to know the community. She wants to meet the principal of Margate Elementary School, located a quarter mile from the church, as the congregation volunteers to help students at the school. The congregation also has a food distribution program.
Cokesbury is located at 1801 NW 65th Avenue, Margate.
