National Night Out offers law enforcement professionals the opportunity to connect with the residents they protect, and Margate takes the celebration to the next level with a massive event.
The city will hold its 23rd National Night Out from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Margate Sports Complex at 1695 Banks Road. Admission is free.
Families can watch the Margate Police Department’s K-9 and Special Response Team demonstrations and participate in carnival-style games, bounce houses, a rock-climbing wall, and live music. There will be live performers, including stilt walkers, a mime, a juggler, and a bubble performer.
What makes Margate’s Night Out unique is that so many agencies participate. They include the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Secret Service, all branches of the military, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Federal Air Marshals, and three area police departments, among others, according to Lisa Huriash, spokesperson for Margate.
Additionally, there will be 2,500 free hot dogs, along with drinks including water, soda, and energy drinks.
National Night Out was created by the National Association of Town Watch to celebrate and strengthen the relationship between communities and law enforcement, according to Huriash.
Mayor Arlene Schwartz is looking forward to National Night Out and expects as many as 15,000 people to come.
“This is marvelous, and we have received national recognition for this event. People from all over the county come to meet various departments. It gives law enforcement a chance to interact with the community,” she said.
Margate Fire Chief Roberto Lorenzo said firefighters will be working in conjunction with the police department and will give a car extraction demonstration. He believes it is a positive community event.
