On August 6, Margate hosted National Night Out at the covered Sports Complex.
This event was one of the largest in South Florida and brought together various law enforcement agencies, including the Margate and Coconut Creek police departments, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, Secret Service, Homeland Security, and others. The Margate Fire Department also participated.
It was an opportunity for families and friend groups to have a night of fun. The Greatest Decades of Rock provided live music, bounce houses, and fun activities for children. Florida Panthers mascot Viktor E. Ratt and the team’s dance group attended the event.
Mayor Tommy Ruzzano said, “This is one of the best Night Out’s in the nation,” adding that the city has won national awards for past events.
Danny Rodriguez, division chief of logistics for the Margate Fire Department, said the event allowed them to spend time with the community and show residents what they do.
The fire department gave a demonstration on how a car crash victim would be cut out of a destroyed car and taken by helicopter to the hospital.
Diana Maglocco, a community police officer, said the event allowed law enforcement personnel to meet with residents in a pleasant environment. The police SWAT team and K-9 unit gave a demonstration to show people what they do. Members of the Coconut Creek SWAT team were also present.
FBI Agent Jeff Green wanted to introduce people to the agency and discuss career opportunities, saying they had 500 job categories available.
Members of the armed forces participated in the event, and several Marine Corps recruiters challenged young people to do chin-ups. Various business organizations also attended.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano enjoyed attending the Night Out and was proud that it was a successful event.
