A man was arrested in Margate after police say he approached a teenage girl near a 7-Eleven and made explicit sexual comments while following her along the sidewalk.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Christopher Michael Grant, 28, of Plantation, was taken into custody on February 15 on charges of harmful communication with a minor and promoting sexual activity of a victim less than 16 years old.
MPD records show the incident occurred on February 13 near 4998 West Atlantic Boulevard. The victim told officers she was walking home around 2:30 p.m. when a man, later identified as Grant, approached her from behind on the south sidewalk and asked her to go into nearby woods so she could perform a sexual act.
The girl refused and continued walking toward her residence, police said. She began recording the interaction on her phone as the man continued to follow her at close range. Officers reported that the video captured Grant repeatedly referencing his genitals and stating that he frequently asks girls to have sex, but is denied.
The victim told police she had never met Grant before and did not feel safe during the encounter. She later identified him in a photo lineup, selecting his photograph as the person who approached her.
Police said officers later found Grant riding a skateboard near North State Road 7 on February 15. An officer made contact and identified him as the suspect, noting he was wearing clothing consistent with the earlier incident and carrying a backpack.
Records show Grant initially denied speaking to the victim or being in the area of the 7-Eleven. When shown a still image taken from the victim’s video, police said Grant acknowledged he had been near the store and walked past the girl, but claimed he did not speak with her.
Grant was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.Â
