During the April 2 meeting, the Margate Commission discussed a possible ordinance allowing recreational and work vehicles to be parked on residents’ properties.
Vice Mayor Antonio Arserio expressed frustration that too many homeowners have been parking multiple work and recreational vehicles on their properties. He is also concerned that many people from outside Margate are storing their vehicles on the properties of friends and relatives living in the city or that residents are renting space for vehicle storage.
“Margate is a working city, and people should be allowed to park work or recreational vehicles on their properties, but they should not be allowed to abuse the situation,” said Arserio.
He proposed that residents should be required to register the vehicles on their property and be able to show proof that they own those vehicles.
Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano opposed this idea and said that the problem is that residents are allowed to park vehicles on the grass. He recommended that people should not be allowed to park cars on the grass.
The commissioners then began a heated discussion on various vehicle storage problems they have seen over the years in Margate. People often stored rusting boats or poorly maintained cars and campers on their properties. There was concern about the undesirable appearance of properties with many vehicles.
It was determined that more should be discussed regarding a possible ordinance for the vehicle issue. For an ordinance to be approved, it would have to be presented as an official ordinance and receive two approvals by the commission.
