Margate residents will have the latest water supply facilities.
During the January 21 meeting, the Margate commission passed an ordinance amending the city’s comprehensive plan to ensure clean water and to adopt the 10-Year Water Supply Facilities Work Plan.
Margate provides potable water to approximately 66,720 residents across 10.7 square miles within Margate and southern Coconut Creek. The system consists of 13.5 million gallons per day, 12 aquifer wells, 3 ground storage tanks, and 213 miles of distribution mains.
Florida law requires local governments to prepare and adopt a 10-Year Water Supply Facilities Work Plan (WSFWP) within 18 months following the South Florida Water Management District’s approval of a regional water supply plan. According to city information, Margate is obligated to update its WSFWP by February 22, 2026.
This plan identifies and plans for the water supply sources, infrastructure, conservation strategies, and regulatory compliance measures necessary to serve existing and future development within the City’s potable water service area. Residents and businesses in Margate and south Coconut Creek receive potable water through the City’s Department of Environmental and Engineering Services (DEES) Utilities Division, which is responsible for planning, building, and operating the water system.
Hazen and Sawyer prepared the 2025 Water Supply Facilities Work Plan Update in close coordination with DEES Utilities staff. The update provides refined water demand projections, evaluates supply adequacy through 2045, and outlines capital improvement needs.
According to city information, they have earmarked $30 million in FY 2027 for compliance with anticipated regulatory requirements.
