The Margate Police Department will soon have a new K-9.
During the April 16 meeting, the commission approved a resolution to enhance the department’s unit, which included the purchase of one replacement canine, handler equipment, and training at a cost not to exceed $23,050.
Canines play an important role in law enforcement. Major Michael Druzbik requested a replacement because Officer Strum had been recently reassigned and his K-9 partner, Bak, had retired, leaving the unit with only three active canines, including the newest addition, Arkan, who was introduced in March.
Maintaining a complement of four canines, with one assigned to each patrol division, is essential for providing comprehensive support to Margate officers and protecting residents. According to Druzbik, K-9 teams have consistently proven invaluable in apprehending violent offenders, conducting narcotics interdiction, detecting firearms, ammunition, or currency, and fostering community relations.
The selection and training of a new handler and canine, along with the procurement of specialized equipment, requires a significant time investment. For this reason, Druzbik recommended approving the purchase as soon as possible.
