Margate City Commissioner Arlene Schwartz. {City of Margate}
Margate city commissioners on Wednesday selected a new mayor and vice mayor, according to the city.
Arlene Schwartz, the Seat 2 commissioner, was tapped by her colleagues as mayor. At the time of her selection, she was vice mayor.
Antonio Arserio, the Seat 3 commissioner, was chosen as Margate’s new vice mayor.
City officials said that each November, the city’s five commissioners elect a mayor and a vice mayor to serve a one-year term.
The mayor serves as the ceremonial head and chairman of the city commission for meetings. Both the mayor and vice mayor have full voting powers on the commission.
Margate voters on Nov. 5 reelected Schwartz, Commissioner Anthony Caggiano, and Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano – the previous mayor – to another term in office.
A retired educator, Schwartz was first elected to the commission for the 1991 term and has served multiple terms in office.
