An Idaho man bloodied a Margate Police officer’s nose and grabbed a police canine by his throat while attempting to gouge the dog’s eyes before his capture, court records show.
Shawn Cielo, 36, of Nampa, Idaho, was arrested on Feb. 27 after he approached a suspicious vehicle that another person had left running in the 3500 block of Banks Road in Margate, according to an arrest affidavit.
When a Margate police officer spotted the illegally parked vehicle and asked Cielo for identification, Cielo “became agitated and refused to provide his identity, stating he wanted an attorney,” the affidavit states.
The officer tried to take Cielo into custody for resisting arrest without violence due to his refusal to identify himself, records show, but Cielo pulled his hands away and moved a hand toward his pocket as if reaching for something, police said.
In response, the officer tried taking Cielo to the ground, spurring Cielo to punch the officer at least three times with a closed fist in his stomach and hip area, the records allege.
As the officer tried to retrieve his police K-9, named Cash, to help detain Cielo, the man pushed the officer, “causing him to hit his nose and head on the vehicle,” the affidavit states. the officer suffered a bloody nose as well as a cut and bruise to his forehead, police said.
Cielo allegedly ran off, and police set up a perimeter to catch him.
Cash the K-9 caught up with Cielo later on Fishermans Drive in Coconut Creek, records show.
When Cash found Cielo, the suspect used “both hands to grab the police canine by the muzzle and throat while trying to gouge his eyes,” the affidavit states.
Officers took Cielo into custody and charged him with battery on an officer, two counts of resisting an officer, causing harm to a police animal, and leaving a car running with the key in the ignition.
Records show he was released from jail on an unspecified bond.
