Coconut Creek Police are recruiting retired law enforcement officers to join the force as school resource officers.
“We know… retirement’s nice but… do you feel like you still have people to help? And do you wanna do it on better terms than a 12-hour shift?” the department said in an online job post seeking SROs. “If so, we have a great group of students and teachers ready to meet you. We are hiring part-time school resource officers. And we are hiring them now.”
SRO duties for the part-time positions are “primarily service-oriented” and include working with and mentoring students, disseminating information, arbitrating disputes, and helping the community through referrals, property protection, crime prevention, investigations, and other public safety services, according to the police department.
The job “may involve threats to personal safety and/or life…duties include an element of personal danger, exposure to adverse weather conditions, apprehending criminals, and directing traffic.”
Candidates must pass a criminal history and driving record check and meet all Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission requirements and the Coconut Creek Police Department.
According to police department policy, SROs “cannot have visible tattoos while wearing long sleeve standard-issued uniforms,” and any tattoos on fingers and wrists “must be covered with appropriate jewelry.”
In December, officials said newly hired school resource officers would receive a retention bonus of $4,500.
The hourly pay rate is $32.67.
SROs work school days from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., or possibly 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., depending on their assigned school.
