An apartment building for teachers could be built on an open lot next to Margate Elementary School.
During the June 18 meeting, Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano said that a representative from the Broward County Public Schools had asked him about asking the commission to rezone a lot it owns next to the school’s campus at 6300 NW 18th Street to allow for an apartment building that would house teachers who struggle to find quality housing in Broward County.
A rezoning to residential would be required to allow for any housing to be built on the property, according to Ruzzano.
“They need to pay their teachers more so they can afford homes in the county rather than getting into the housing business,” said Ruzzano.
He said Broward Schools are considering converting older, under-enrolled schools into housing for teachers. Ruzzano said the former Dave Thomas East Education Center in Pompano Beach is also being considered for educator housing.
Mayor Arlene Schwartz is also skeptical about the prospect of teacher housing. She said the starting salary for a public school teacher is too low, and the school district needs to increase teacher salaries rather than placing educators in apartment homes.
