A man was arrested after his victim thwarted a sexual assault at a bus stop by allegedly biting his penis to escape.
On August 7, officers from the Margate Police Department responded to a 911 call from a caller who alleged to be witnessing an assault and attempted sexual battery in progress near the 2700 block of North State Road 7.
According to the report, upon arrival, MPD officers reported being flagged down by a witness who observed a black male attacking a black female in the area. Officers soon after that witnessed the suspect, later identified as Devon Applewhite, 40, of Fort Lauderdale, assaulting the victim in the middle of the roadway.
Records of the incident detail how Applewhite was observed pulling the victim’s hair and striking her while his pants were unzipped and partially pulled down, fully exposing his penis.
According to the victim’s statement received after the incident, she was sleeping at a nearby bus stop at the intersection of Colonial Drive and North State Road 7 when she was awoken by Applewhite, who began punching her on both sides of her face.
The victim reported that Applewhite then attempted to force her to perform oral sex, at which point she bit the tip of his penis and tried to escape.
As she fled, the victim told officers Applewhite allegedly dragged her to a nearby canal, where he continued to assault her, striking her in the face and choking her until she nearly lost consciousness.
The report says the victim managed to break free and ran into the roadway, attempting to flag down passing vehicles before collapsing. It was at this point that officers arrived at the scene and intervened.
Applewhite was immediately detained and arrested, after which he refused to speak.
Based on the officers’ observations and the victim’s account, Applewhite was taken into custody and arrested on charges of battery and sexual battery.
Before being taken to the Broward County Main Jail, Applewhite was transported to HCA Florida Northwest Hospital for medical evaluation. However, medical staff reported no physical evidence of the woman’s that his penis had been bitten.
