Man High on Fentanyl Arrested After Masturbating Outside Home, Urinating and Jumping Into Canal

A man police say was high on fentanyl was arrested after a homeowner reported catching him masturbating in front of his wife outside their home, urinating on the property, jumping into a nearby canal, and fleeing. Officers later captured him.

According to MPD arrest records, Andrew Mark McAvoy, 38, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested on January 9 in the area of the 600 block of Northwest 76th Terrace. According to the report, the victim told officers he stepped outside to check on his wife when he observed McAvoy standing in the yard with his hands inside his pants, masturbating.

Police say the victim said McAvoy, unfazed by being caught, then further exposed his genitals and continued the act in front of him, and then began urinating toward the victim. The victim told police that he began to call 911, at which point McAvoy fled the area, running through neighboring backyards.

Officers responding to the call were advised that another unit spotted a man matching the suspect’s description running across West Atlantic Boulevard. An officer reported seeing McAvoy exit a canal and run north along the canal bank, ignoring repeated commands to stop despite the activation of police lights and sirens.

Police say McAvoy eventually stopped, dropped to the ground, and was taken into custody.

A search of McAvoy’s backpack and personal belongings allegedly uncovered four clear plastic baggies containing a white powdery substance that later tested positive for fentanyl. Officers also reported finding a glass pipe with burnt residue.

McAvoy was medically cleared at Northwest Medical Center before being transported to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
