Jacari Jacques {BSO}
A teen was arrested after police say he accidentally discharged a firearm, sending a bullet through a nearby home’s kitchen window and into a refrigerator.
Jacari Jacques, 18, of Pompano Beach, was taken into custody on December 26 and charged with discharging a firearm in public and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, Margate Police Department records show.
According to MPD, the incident happened at a residence near Northwest 62nd Avenue. The victim told officers she was seated in her dining room when she heard a loud bang coming from her kitchen, then noticed smoke and discovered a bullet hole in her refrigerator door. When she opened the door, a small piece of metal fell onto the kitchen floor, which police later identified as an expended bullet.
Police say the bullet also traveled through a kitchen window above the sink before striking the refrigerator. The victim immediately alerted a friend who was inside the home. Neither person was injured.
Records show that about 10 minutes after the reported gunshot, detectives observed a subject matching the suspect’s description leaving a nearby residence. Officers made contact with Jacques and placed him under arrest.
Investigators say Jacques told them he had found a black Glock handgun in nearby bushes earlier that day. He admitted to bringing the firearm to a residence where he was “showing off” the gun in the backyard.
Jacques told police he removed the magazine but did not realize a round remained in the chamber when he pulled the trigger. He said he pointed the gun toward the ground and did not know where the bullet went.
After seeing police vehicles enter the neighborhood, Jacques told officers he placed the gun inside a black satchel and hid it in bushes near the Coral Bay clubhouse because he did not want to get in trouble, police said. Investigators later recovered the firearm.
Jacques was transported to the Broward County Jail.
