Tommy Kohlwaies has been hired as the new coach for the North Broward Prep girls basketball team.
He takes over following one of the greatest seasons in school history under Coach Garnder Michel, where NBP made the Regional Final.
“I got to see North Broward Play twice last season and just saw a really good team,” Kohlwaies said. “The opportunity came, and I am ecstatic about just being there. Mike Ostrowski reminds me a lot of my former AD at Newman, and I feel like I am going to get that support here.”
Tommy Kohlwaies has been involved with basketball his entire life. After shining as a player at Cardinal Newman High School, he also got a chance to coach there along with John I Leonard and Park Vista High School. Kohlwaies also had the opportunity to coach NBP’s star Alexa Schwartz and FGB South Florida.
“Knowing Coach Tommy for a couple of years has allowed me to see his energetic and present coaching style, which I’ve always admired, Schwartz said. “I think he will be a breath of fresh air for our team, and his care for the teams he coaches will allow us to thrive this year. I believe he will be a great fit for NBP, and I can’t wait to be a part of this season’s successes.”
Tommy also has helped guide her daughter to a scholarship in college. Angelina Kohlwaives, who had two ACL surgeries in high school, will be playing at Mount Aloysius College in Pennsylvania.
While NBP had threes seniors graduate, including Riley Weiss, the team’s all-time single-season scoring leader, NBP will still return several key players, including Schwartz. While Tommy knows adjusting to a new coach will take some time, he is extremely big on development.
Fortunately, NBP had some highly talented underclassmen and a strong group of girls in middle school.
