A Margate Elementary School teacher faces child abuse charges after allegedly assaulting a kindergartner.
On October 10, Margate Elementary School surveillance cameras captured Khadijah Muhammad, 54, of North Lauderdale, physically assaulting a student, leading to her eventual arrest by the Margate Police Department on October 12.
According to the arrest report, the incident occurred in a hallway before the school day. It was preceded by the student tossing a piece of paper in the direction of another child, which set Muhammad off in a fit of anger.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Muhammad, who was not the victim’s assigned teacher, aggressively approaching the child, grabbing him by his left wrist, and lifting him off the ground by his arms.
Muhammad is also seen twisting the child’s arms and seizing him by the back of his shirt, forcefully shoving him across the hallway.
Muhammad can be seen in the video tearing the student’s jacket off his back, and throughout the two-minute altercation, she maintained her grip on the child’s arms, wrists, shirt, and jacket.
Towards the end of the footage, partially obscured at times, Muhammad appeared to grab the student around his neck and violently slammed him to the ground.
Following an investigation, Muhammad was taken into custody and has been charged with one count of child abuse without great bodily harm.
She was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond.
In response to the incident, the Broward County Public School Board issued a statement that read in part, “The school is working closely with law enforcement regarding the situation, and the teacher involved has been reassigned away from students and the school pending the outcome of the case.”
