Margate Police on Sunday shot and killed a man they found choking his wife in front of their baby, authorities said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Monday confirmed it is investigating the fatal shooting, which happened after police responded to a domestic violence call around 7 a.m. in the 6900 block of Northwest 1st Street in Margate.
Police said they heard screaming inside the home and a baby crying when they arrived. They spoke with a woman who said she was hiding from her husband inside a closet of the home, held against her will.
When a man burst into the closet and took the woman’s phone, ending her conversation with police, the police department’s Special Response Team entered the property and found the man choking his wife, authorities said.
The first officer to enter the room saw the attack underway and opened fire, shooting the attacker.
The accused attacker was the victim’s husband, Louisson Pierrot, 38, who authorities rushed to North Broward Hospital for his injuries, authorities said.
Pierrot was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
An FDLE spokesman said the agency is investigating the shooting at the request of Margate Police.
The police department’s Special Response Team (SRT) is “a specially trained and equipped group” of 17 police officers “available to deal with high-risk situations,” according to the department’s website.
According to real estate records, Pierrot and two other buyers purchased the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 6984 N.W. 1st St. in July 2021 for $395,000.
