A Margate man faces child abuse charges after a seemingly ordinary basketball game turned violent.
Margate Police Department spoke to witnesses who detailed a chaotic scene in which an older man choked an underaged opponent because he felt he was playing too hard.Â
Witnesses of the assault told officers the group was playing basketball on October 10 at Coral Gate Park, at 5650 Coral Lake Drive, when the competition turned violent between a man, later identified as Brandon Justin Moore, 42, of Margate, and an underaged victim.
According to the victim, the physical assault began after Moore became frustrated by his attempt to stop him from making a shot. The victim said that following the play, Moore allegedly placed both hands on his neck and forcefully pushed him to the ground.
Arrest records show Moore mounted the victim, holding him down by the neck. During this terrifying ordeal, the victim told officers he could not breathe.
Witnesses told deputies the assault only ended when other players on the court intervened, pulling Moore away from the victim.Â
Due to the victim being underaged, Moore is now facing child abuse charges.
Following interviews with all those involved, Moore was taken into custody at his Margate home later that night and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $2,500 bond.
