Matthew Bryant Thorpe {BSO}
A Margate woman escaped an alleged domestic assault and flagged down police after being kicked in the pelvic area and threatened with a knife.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Matthew Bryant Thorpe, 31, of Margate, was arrested on September 5 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence battery.
According to the probable cause affidavit, an officer was conducting stationary radar near 6400 Southgate Boulevard when a vehicle pulled up with its hazard lights activated and stopped in front of him. An injured woman got out and approached the officer, telling him she had just been attacked at a nearby residence.
Police said the confrontation began after Thorpe allegedly woke the woman up and questioned her about what he believed was evidence of infidelity on her cellphone.
Records show the argument allegedly escalated as Thorpe pushed the woman, pressed a cellphone against her forehead, shoved her onto a couch, and assaulted her.
The affidavit describes the violence continuing throughout the residence. Thorpe allegedly beat the woman throughout the house, and, at one point, allegedly forced her against the bathroom door frame by the neck and struck her in the pelvic area with his knee.
Police said the woman had bruising that was consistent with her account.
According to the affidavit, Thorpe then threatened to kill the woman, allegedly telling her she was “lucky” to be alive and threatening to suffocate her while she slept.
Police said Thorpe then went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and waved it in front of her. The woman told officers she then escaped the residence and drove to Southgate Boulevard, where she approached the officer.
The woman declined rescue treatment at the scene.
Thorpe was arrested and transported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
