The Margate Fire Cadets recently earned some significant honors.
In early April, the Margate cadets earned first place in a competition at the Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety. The cadets were among 20 teams competing in various events.
According to George Gordillo, cadet leader, the cadets also earned first place in ladder raises, medical and first aid, combat challenges, trauma care, working with water, and sportsmanship.
According to Nicole O’Neill, fire inspector/life safety educator for the fire department, the Margate cadets were especially proud of winning best overall and best sportsmanship. She supervises the cadets and has 23 years of experience with the department.
“If these cadets choose to pursue a career in firefighting, they will have good opportunities. Many fire departments are hiring recent graduates of the fire academy. If they can stick with it, they can be successful,” said O’Neill.

Gordillo wants a career with the Margate Fire Department. “I would love to be part of this department, and I hope to have a career in firefighting,” he said.
The cadets meet and train on Tuesday nights. They undergo a demanding workout and work on basic firefighting skills.
