Anthony Careccia wants elementary school students to know they can make good choices and protect themselves.
As the School Resource Officer at Margate Elementary School, he runs the D.A.R.E. program. He teaches students how to handle peer pressure effectively, take care of themselves, and make good decisions.
“I tell students, if a peer asks you to do something you know is wrong, like using drugs, respectfully say no. I want the students to know that a bad decision that leads to an arrest will hurt their future,” said Careccia.
Margate Elementary held a D.A.R.E. graduation for the school’s fifth graders on December 18. Mayor Arlene Schwartz and Vice Mayor Anthony Caggiano participated in the ceremony. The students who wrote the two best essays on what they learned in D.A.R.E. read them.
The ceremony was held in the school’s cafeteria, and many parents attended. Each fifth grader was recognized by their class for completing the program and received a certificate and applause.
Caggiano spoke to the students, telling them to make good choices for their future. “I am old, and you are young. Your future is ahead. You will be our leaders, so make good decisions,” he said.
Schwartz complimented the students on completing the program. “I am proud of you, and you have been given the tools to have a great future,” she said.
