Hugh Hanslip {BSO}
A man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he attacked his wife during a domestic incident that included threats involving a firearm and calling immigration officials on her.
According to Margate Police Department reports, Hugh Hanslip, 45, of Margate, was charged on June 4 with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery, and tampering with or harassing a witness or victim, stemming from an incident that occurred on May 26.
An affidavit filed by the Margate Police Department details what allegedly began with a verbal altercation between Hanslip and his wife. According to the report, Hanslip became physically aggressive, swinging at the victim and causing her to fall. He then allegedly grabbed her by the throat, kicked her while she was on the ground, and later threatened to “put a bullet” in her head while holding a firearm under his leg on the couch.
The victim told police that Hanslip allegedly has a history of threatening to call immigration enforcement on her during disagreements and altercations, and preventing her from calling police in previous incidents by confiscating her phone.
Hanslip was arrested on June 4 and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Records show authorities have also initiated a risk protection order, and victim advocates are working with the victim, who has expressed fear due to her immigration status and Hanslip’s history of control.
